Designer Speak @ Aura-b.com-Hershey Chan

  1. What do you most enjoy about your job?
The freedom of doing what I love and what I want. In reality, I consider this job not as a duty or responsibility, but my own PASSION. Being a jewellery designer enables me to exercise my creative spirit and to make a difference in this world. It gives me pure joy to inspire others through my designs that show my identity as a woman, wife and mother. Nothing really compares to working like it’s not totally work at all. I am so blessed to have this kind of daily job.
  2. What do you least enjoy about your job?
Being on top of everything and wearing so many hats are two things that make my job as a designer and business Proprietress tougher compared to being a regular employee. Even though I have hired people who help me professionally, I always get my hands dirty in every single detail in terms of business management, operations and marketing. It’s apparently stressful, but it always has something in return – which brings income, not only for myself, but also for the families of my employees. Handling a business is not a short-term commitment, because for me, it is involving yourself to a bigger responsibility of providing your own needs and others’ needs.
  3. What was the first item you ever sold?
During the 1st year of my job when I was still a budding designer back then, I made a Swarovski bracelet and my mother bought it. My family has always been the first supporter of my craft.
  4. What little known fact do people not know about you?
Most people see me as a designer and a business person with a strong personality, but they do not know that in a span of seven years, it took me a pale of tears with the combination of patience and hard work to make my advocacy for Zuri Wearable Art stronger and better.
  5. Who is your favourite designer(s)?
Coco Chanel – I love the unique blending of simplicity and elegance in her designs.
  6. Do you have a muse? Who, or what, is it?
My muse is my little princess who is the living inspiration I have now, my 5-month old daughter, Little Hershey. Ever since she was born, my enthusiasm for design became higher. It really delights me now to come up with innovative designs, suitable not only for my usual target market – the women and young professionals – but even for babies of her age. My little angel represents my brand’s love for unique and beautiful pieces.
  7. Do you try to send out a message or theme in your clothes/accessories?
Yes. I always encourage the women with my fashion statement, “Wearable Art is the new fashion.” I want to make artistic yet wearable pieces that are not overwhelming. My pieces are not simply called “accessories”, but “wearable art,” because each single piece is created with a design inspiration. Putting on my “wearable art” is like wearing a painting or a sculpture; it has an impact and a statement that behold one’s eyes and mind.
  8. What is your favourite fashion season?
Spring/Summer. I love vibrant colours that depict a cheerful mood. I love relating the palette of my designs similar to the hues of nature.
  9. What kind of personality do you design for?
  10. The trademark of designs is for women of age and young professionals, but as of now, I am diversifying my creations. I just recently launched a new line for babies, the Zuri Baby Couture, which caters to both fashionable mothers and beautiful babies that want a unique fashion statement. Soon enough, my goal is to design more for younger generations. I believe that one of the must-have skills of a designer is to create designs for any market segment and any age bracket. However, the first love of my design expertise remains to be dedicated for matured and professional women.
  11. How do you want people to feel when wearing your designs?
  12. Whoever’s going to wear a Zuri piece, I want her to feel proud and confident of herself, because the piece that she is wearing came from a handful of love and passion. Every designer piece that I produce is 100% handmade. I just hope that whoever’s going to wear my creation becomes an ambassadress of beauty inside and out.
